Boss of real ale bible calls time after 40 years
RAISE a glass to the man who saved us from gassy, fizzy 70s beer and helped create the classy craft ale revolution we’re enjoying today. At the age of 78 – after his 24th edition of CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide – Britain’s Mr Beer is finally retiring as editor. YE olde fighting cocks joins fight to save st albans pubs
Christo has joined a number of publicans in the city to give his support to Sean Hughes, the owner of Dylan's and The Boot, who has launched the Save St. Albans Pubs Campaign, which is calling on the government to offer additional rate relief to pubs who are facing a 72% hike in rates that is likely to lead to severe job losses and pub closures. Talking to the Hemel Gazette last month, Christo said business rates for the pub are due to soar by 47% over the next five years. That works out at having to sell 7,000 extra pints per year to make a profit.
Hughes echoed Christo's comments, telling the Herts Advertiser that the Save St Albans Pubs campaign had calculated 80% of pubs in St Albans will see their rates rise by 72%, which equals £27,000 a pub....
